Effortless, short hikes (up to 2 hours)
The two-day short trip leads you to Imereti and Racha. The route runs along the Silk Road towards West Georgia, heart of ancient Colchis. The schedule envisions visiting Gelati and Motsameta Monasteries and the Bagrati Cathedral, once the boldest construction in Georgia. You will also discover the jewel of the Georgian church architecture, the richly ornamented Nikortsminda in the deep green mountainous region Racha.

1Silk Road and ancient capital of Colchis

Journey west along a branch of the age-old Silk Road where we take a short break at Stalin’s birth house (no museum visit). Next we continue our journey to Kutaisi, the old capital of Colchis and an important politico-cultural centre in the Middle Ages. En route we visit Monastery Motsameta, a place of special healing power and a frequented holy place of pilgrimage. Shortly before arriving in Kutaisi we visit the Gelati Monastery, standing out for its extraordinary architecture and listed among the World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Here, in the 12th century, King David the Builder founded one of the very first academies worldwide. In the afternoon we take a relaxed walk through the historical centre of Kutaisi and visit the recently restored Bagrati Church (10th-11th c.), another UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, once the boldest construction in Georgia due to its generously spacious interior.

Mountain region Racha, Nikortsminda Church, Ubisa Church
After breakfast journey to the mountain region Racha, whose inhabitants are known for their kind and tranquil nature. Here we visit the Nikortsminda Church, situated in a dreamy Rachan village. The church is among the most important constructions of the Middle Ages. Being by far the most richly decorated church in Georgia, Nikortsminda is a sightseeing must. Afterwards we head back to Tbilisi across the Rikoti Pass, a natural divide between East- and West Georgia. En route we visit the Ubisa Church with its excellently preserved frescos of the 13th century.

Generally, if you were satisfied with quality and service a small tip is welcome.
The temperature in the lowlands from June to august can rise up to 40-45 degrees, sunscreen with high protection factor is strongly recommended. In the mountain regions on the other side, the temperature may get to approx. 20-25 degrees, in the evening it often cools down to 15-20 degrees.
The Kintvisi Monastery has a particularly stict dress regulations. Ladies have to wear a longer skirt and a headscarf, gentlemen - long trousers (below knee) and a shirt with sleeves covering the shoulders.
Long driving distance
Some day-routes require a relatively longer driving distance. Nevertheless, they are carefully planned to be diverse and exciting. You are welcome to have photo stops and/or a picnic en route.
