The three-day short trip leads you to the most legendary part of the Greater Caucasus. On the trails of Dumas, Pushkin and Lermontov you follow the Georgian Military Road over the Cross Pass and through the Darial Gorge. Experience Kazbeg, the Mount of Prometheus, illuminated in the early morning light and visit the spectacularly situated mountain village Tsdo.
Hike from the mountain village Juta into the enchanting Sno Valley up to the Chaukhi Massif, so called "Caucasus Dolomites", is the highlight of this tour.

1Along the Georgian Military Road
Fortified church Ananuri, Cross Pass 2.395m, Stepantsminda
Journey to the Greater Caucasus. The route leads along the age-old caravan trail used to connect the North with the Orient as described by the Greek geographer Strabo in his reports of (1st c. B.C.). Due to its strategic significance gained in the 19th century, the Russian Tsarist Empire classified the caravan linking road as “the gate to the Orient”. A number of fortifications emerged along the route serving the purpose of defense against hostile attacks. After visiting the richly ornamented Ananuri Fortress Complex (17th c.), picturesquely embedded in the Zhinvali Reservoir landscape, the journey continues via the Cross Pass at the altitude of 2.395m to Stepantsminda (former Kasbegi) at the foot of the Kasbeg Glacier.
In the afternoon a hike to a very old mountain village Tsdo, lying spectacularly on a rocky ridge of the Darial Gorge. Thanks to its remote location the village remained largely untouched by tourism and thus renders an authentic impression of the life of mountain dwellers.

After breakfast a hike (approx. 3-4 h.) to the pilgrimage church Tsminda Sameba (Gergeti Trinity Church, 14th c., 2.170m), standing in proud solitary splendour in front of a spectacular panorama of the Kasbegi Summit (5.047m), the highest mount in the eastern Greater Caucasus. As the legend says, Zeus chained Prometheus on the top of the mount as a punishment for bringing fire to the mankind. The afternoon begins with a trip to the Russian border over the wild Darial Gorge, the millennia-old battleground for aggressors baptized with the name “Gate to the North” and known as “Gate to the Underworld” to the ancient Greeks. In the afternoon, journey back to Stepantsminda. A short hike to Gveleti waterfall brings the day to a relaxing close.

3Hiking in the Greater Caucasus
Juta, Sno Valley, Chaukhi Massif
The final day of the trip holds for you a hike in the Greater Caucasus passing by a dreamy enchanted village Juta (2.165 m), the second highest village in Europe, lying on the northern slope of the Caucasian Mountain Range seven kilometres away from the border to Ingushetia. The route leads over yellow Rhododendron fields and colourful wildflower meadows, higher and higher to the steep basalt rocks of the majestic Chaukhi Massif (3.842 m), the most famous climbing area in the Eastern Caucasus. European mountaineers baptized the massif with the name “Caucasian Dolomites”. Subsequently, the journey back to Tbilisi.
