1Life & wine in Kakheti
Ikalto, Alaverdi, Telavi, Shumi wine estate, Tsinandali
Journey over the gentle ridges of the Gombori Mountains to the wine land Kakheti. We visit the ruins of the Ikalto Academy (9th c.), the cultural centre of East Georgia in medieval times and the biggest cathedral of Kakheti, Alaverdi (11th c.), the witness of turbulent history of Georgia throughout centuries. Next we stop in Telavi, the capital of Kakheti. Afterward a short walking tour in Telavi we continue our way along the Kakhetian Wine Route and visit the former princely residence Tsinandali with its famous wine cellar, as well as the nearby wine estate Shumi, where wine is prepared in the Georgian, as well as in the European way. A native winegrower will give us a guided tour through the production facility explaining the contrast between the two methods of winemaking. Dinner with wine degustation at Shumi rounds off the day.

2Churches, monasteries and romantic Sighnaghi

After breakfast we continue our journey along the Wine Route visiting the Gremi Monastery with its Museum of History and the Nekresi Monastery complex, which includes the oldest church in Georgia (4th c.), still echoing the architectural style of Zoroastrian temples, and an ancient Georgian wine cellar, where, in accordance with the traditional “Georgian method”, wine is stored in Kvevris (pottery amphorae) embedded in the earth. Our journey leads us on along the Kakhetian Wine Route. Near Gurjaani we visit the outstanding double-dome church Kvelatsminda and continue to Sighnaghi where we can enjoy a relaxed late afternoon walking tour through its wriggling lanes with a breathtaking view over the vast Alazani Valley. Upon request you can also visit the Sighnaghi museum with a number of valuable paintings by the most famous Georgian artist Pirosmani. Finally, we take our journey back to Tbilisi.
