Alaverdi, Tsinandali, Sighnaghi, Bodbe
Journey over the gentle ridges of the Gombori Mountains to the wine land Kakheti. We visit the biggest cathedral of Kakheti, Alaverdi (11th c.), the witness of turbulent history of Georgia throughout centuries. Next we stop in Telavi, the capital of Kakheti. After a short walking tour in Telavi we continue our way along the Kakhetian Wine Route and visit the former princely residence Tsinandali with its famous wine cellar, as well as the nearby wine estate Shumi, where wine is prepared in the Georgian, as well as in the European way. A native winegrower will give us a guided tour through the production facility explaining the contrast between the two methods of winemaking. The tour proceeds to a cosy medieval town Sighnaghi, lying high above the Alazani Plateau. After a relaxed walk through the wriggling lanes of sighnaghi we visit the nearby Bodbe Monastery, the burial site of Saint Nino. Finally, the trip returns to Tbilisi.
At request and additional cost, we can take a short detour to an old village Jimiti, where we can enjoy a late evening dinner at a local family’s place with home-pressed country wine.
