Effortless, short hikes (up to 2 hours)
Trip to the mysterious semi-desert Gareja. Visit one of the oldest monasteries of Georgia, where from the 6th c. onwards a number of monastic communities emerged. The monkhood left behind not only a significant proportion of early medieval Georgian manuscripts but also founded their own fresco-style – the School of Gareja.

David Gareji monasteries Lavra & Udabno, Ninotsminda Church
Journey to southeast into the Steppe Desert Gareja, where an extremely vibrant and culturally fruitful monastic life developed in the 6th century. We visit the Lavra Monastery of David Gareji, followed by a short hike (a 45 min. climb, total time of the hike approx. 2 hrs.) to the caves of the Udabno-Monastery with the famous frescos of the Gareja School standing out with its own unique style and expressiveness. The track runs along a mountain-comb with a spectacular view over the bizarre desert landscape at the border to Azerbaijan. On the way back, we can visit the ruins of the oldest cross-cupola-church Ninotsminda (6th c.).
At request (for an additional charge) a short detour to an old village Jimiti and lunch including house made Kvevri wine at a local Georgian Family’s place. The visit will give you a good glimpse into the daily life of a typical rural Georgian family.

- According to the programme
Sturdy, comfortable, ankle-high trekking shoes are necessary. You are going to need sunscreen as well, it can get very hot at noon.
Ladies are going to need a headscarf for the Gareji monastery (can be borrowed on site).
*The ascent to the Udabno caves takes approx. 45 minutes and proceeds along a partially steep, unsecured path. The altitude difference is 450m, the path is not secured by any railings. Medium stamina, surefootedness and head for heights is required. Our guides are experienced in assisting the participants for whom the ascent might prove challenging. Nevertheless, we discourage you from participating in the Udabno hike if you don't feel confident enough. It is of course possible to stay at the lower part of the monastery until the rest of the group is back.
